Salisbury events guide w/c 25th July 2022

Looking for things to do in Salisbury now that the school holidays are in full swing?

There’s crazy croquet, workshops, comedy and fun in the sun happening this week in our modern medieval city!

Whether you’re looking for ways to keep the kids entertained over the summer holidays, or you’re in need of some grown-up fun – we have some ideas below:

Go crazy for Salisbury’s summer fun!

Fayre on the Square 2022 is now officially open! The summer event got underway over the weekend in the Guildhall Square and now runs until the end of August. There’s crazy croquet, table tennis, ice cream, a city garden bar and street food vendors – lots for the whole family! You may notice the very British theme to Fayre on the Square this year, with Big Ben, Paddington, the Queen and a Mini some of the elements to look out for.

If you want to have a go at the crazy croquet you can book a slot by clicking here.

Help rebug the planet

We’ve all heard how important it is to look after the wildlife around us, especially as climate change impacts habitats, but how to we actually do that? You can find out this week at Salisbury Museum. Vicki Hird is the author of Rebugging the planet: The Remarkable Things that Insects (and Other Invertebrates) Do - And Why We Need to Love Them More, and she’ll be talking about how we can avoid 'insectageddon'. See her on 28th July. Find more information here.

Get crafty!

The Make Arcade is a craft studio in Salisbury that offers fun workshops for adults and children. You can get creative this week with their clay accessory workshop on 27th July. Whether you’re a beginner or more experienced, you’ll get to make your own polymer clay hairclips and earrings, and hopefully make some new friends! Then, on 28th July, The Make Arcade Kids Craft Club kicks off. Over the next four Thursdays, children will get to take part in a range of different workshops. It's for children aged 8 and over, and this week they’ll get to make yarn rainbows or felt cacti! Find out more about The Make Arcade here.

Calling all Noah's!

Don’t worry, there’s no sign of flooding on the way, but there is an ark in Salisbury! This week, St Mark’s Church officially opens THE ARK, a brilliantly crafted ship made by The Salisbury’s Men Shed with sea creatures designed by local school children. The ARK was created as a sign of hope to go with the rainbows that appeared during lockdown and you can see it (alongside an Ark Exhibition, refreshments and activities) on Thursday 28th and Friday 29th July from 2pm to 7pm.

Fun in the Sun

If you’re looking for ways to keep younger children occupied, make sure to head to Fun in the Sun this week. There will be craft play, music and games for primary school aged children. There are two Fun In The Sun events this summer – this first is on 30th July at Salisbury Methodist Church but if you can’t get to that one there’s also another next month at Salisbury United Reformed Church.

Summer coding

Scratch is a programme that allows kids to create their own interactive stories, games, and animations and this week a workshop at The Underground Studios will give youngsters the help to develop their coding skills. The Scratch Coding Workshop takes place on 30th July and is open to those aged 8 to 12.

Classic fun

Rainer Hersch is a man with many talents. Not only has he conducted orchestras and appeared on Radio 4 and Classic FM, he’s also a comedic maestro! This week he’ll entertain audiences at Salisbury’s Medieval Hall with his laugh out loud show 'All Classical Music Explained'. If you’ve ever wondered “is the triangle hard?” or “what do conductors actually do?” - this is for you! Get ready for a brilliantly silly night of laughter on 30th July.

As if all that wasn’t enough to keep you entertained this week there’s also evening racing at Salisbury Racecourse on Thursday, Swing Unlimited with their fun music sessions in the Cathedral Close on Sunday, the Salisbury Bear Hunt and Grayson Perry exhibition at Salisbury Cathedral. You can find those and more on our What’s On pages here.
