This talk will explore cultural and aesthetic references to insects across human history, from cave paintings to modern art movements and advertising. The talk will examine insects as the artists' muse and discuss their role as cultural icons.

Peter Smithers was an entomologist at the University of Plymouth until his retirement in 2013. Over his time there he developed a keen interest in the links between the arts and sciences, organising many events for the university and the Royal Entomological Society that crossed these cultural boundaries. These include, art exhibitions, contemporary dance, opera and film.
