The tradition of the Chorister Bishop (or Boy Bishop as it was then) dates back to medieval times, when a boy chorister was elected on the Feast of St Nicholas on 6 December to take the place of the Bishop. We continue this ceremony each year on the closest Sunday to the Feast of St Nicholas, but now alternating years for boy and girl choristers. This year a boy chorister will be elected as Chorister Bishop, will be robed in traditional cope and mitre and will and he will preach at this special service of Evensong.
