A lecture by Arts Society accredited lecturer Clare Ford-Wille entitled Botanical Marvels - The Origins and Development of Botanical Art.
The lecture will explore the classical origins of botanical art and the great innovations of the Renaissance artists and botanists to the further development of the subject in the work of 17th and 18th century artists to modern times. Among wonderful examples are the paintings of Pedanius Dioscorides, Martin Schongauer, Maria Sibylla Merian, Georg Dionysius Ehret, and Pierre-Joseph Redoute to 19th and 20th century artists, such as Marianne North and Rory McEwen. Before photography, this was the only way for plants to be identified and recorded for many purposes from medical science to the recording of new plants from the voyages of discovery and the viewer's sheer delight in visual observation.
