The seventeen Le Corbusier buildings, spread over seven countries, now under UNESCO protection are a testimonial to the invention of a new architectural language that attempted to meet the needs of ‘modern man in the machine age’. Lauded for his iconic buildings, Le Corbusier’s roots lay in painting. Rejecting the confusion of Cubism, Swiss born Le Corbusier collaborated with painter Amédée Ozenfant to establish Purism, which sought to restore order. In a series of experimental buildings, Corbusier attempted to put his theories into practice. Le Corbusier’s architectural work is said to mark the birth of three major trends in modern architecture: Purism, Brutalism, and Sculptural Architecture. Quite a legacy.
