The play centres around a small cotton handkerchief, the one in the title. It has strawberries embroidered on it, and it is lost. Or is it? It is a very important object and the loss of it signifies much, much more than its obvious lowly worth. Playwright Paula Vogel draws attention to the female characters (Desdemona, Emilia, and Bianca) and puts them centre stage. They are free from the confines of William Shakespeare’s Othello. They can do exactly what they please, and they do.
As the three women explore a different life, they strike up new and unusual friendships. Are they really friends though, or is it just a passing phase? This play is humorous and bawdy. However, underneath there is another strand. A much more ominous one. We are taken on a cinematic journey below the surface of Othello's palatial world. Don't miss it!!
