Visiting the Cathedral over the mourning period

Following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Salisbury Cathedral is in a period of mourning.

Whether you were planning to visit the Cathedral, or you had booked to attend an event, here are the answers to the frequently asked questions as Salisbury Cathedral is in a period of mourning.

Visiting

Can I visit the Cathedral?

The Cathedral is open for people to pay their respects. Normal tourist visiting has been suspended until the day after the Queen’s funeral.

When is the cathedral open for mourners?

Opening hours are from 9.30 am until after Evensong on Monday 12th to Friday 16th September.

All who wish to pay their respects to Her Majesty The Queen are welcome and mourners can sign the books of condolence or light a candle.

Due to a service taking place on the morning of Saturday 17th September, the books of condolence will be available for signing in the Cloisters.

Details for Sun 18th and Mon 19th will be confirmed as soon as possible.

When is the Chapter House and Magna Carta open?

The Chapter House and Magna Carta will remain closed until the day after the Queen’s funeral.

Is there an admission charge?

Admission fees and tourist visiting have been suspended. This will remain in place until the day after the Queen’s funeral.

Events

Can I still visit the Grayson Perry exhibition: The Vanity of Small Differences?

As a result of normal tourist visiting being suspended until the day after the Queen’s funeral, The Grayson Perry exhibition will remain in situ but will not be fully accessible until 20th September.

Will the organ concert by Richard Pinel go ahead on 17th September?

The organ concert by Richard Pinel on 17th September will go ahead as planned.

Services and Worship

What services are happening?

Daily services will continue as normal. Appropriate prayers and liturgy marking the death of HM The Queen will be included in all Cathedral worship during the period of mourning.

I have booked a ticket to visit – can I re-book or be refunded?

If you have not already been contacted to re-book your visit, please email groups@salcath.co.uk

Anyone who has booked to visit during the period of mourning who is not able to transfer their ticket to another time will be refunded in full. If you have not already been contacted, please email groups@salcath.co.uk

Visiting the Shop, Refectory and Cloisters

The shop, refectory and the cloisters are open as normal. Details for the day of the Queen’s funeral will be confirmed as soon as possible.
