‘Returning’ is a wonderfully evocative group exhibition featuring five artists who also happen to be very close friends! Two of the artists are childhood friends from South Africa. Two are married to each other. Three of the artists became friends many years ago while doing their foundation together at Central Saint Martins. All have shared decades of close friendship and connection across countries and through varied careers and life changes with paintings reflecting the artists’ personal journeys: the people, places, and emotion that inhabit their memories.

Local artist Alexa Mackenzie who grew up in Cape Town and now works as a film editor, paints with water-based oils on canvas and wood, creating
"...snapshots in time". Also local to the area are: mixed-media artist Vivienne Hewland whose layered and textured paintings reflect a complexity of emotions and visceral reaction to a recent breast cancer journey and Mark Kenchington who creates atmospheric landscapes and seascapes using charcoal and chalk. London-based artist Rebecca Wellburn explores the fragmented nature of memory, her paintings bringing together people, places and half remembered objects whilst Philadelphia-based figurative artist Clare Luzuriaga draws inspiration from old family photographs, painting primarily in oil on board.

All of the artists have encouraged and supported the arts practice in each other and will be in the Main Gallery for 'Meet the Artist' on Saturday 27th June between 11am - 2pm.
