Stuart Moss opened Mossy’s Shoe Repairs in Salisbury in September 2023, bringing his passion and expertise to the city. He’d previously had a shop in Southend and wanted to open somewhere more rural, and thought Salisbury was the perfect spot. A third-generation cobbler, Stuart has almost 40 years of experience in the trade and has been involved in it since he could reach the bench.
Whilst predominantly a shoemaker and repairer, Stuart doesn’t just stick to human shoes… He’s previously made a moccasin for a rhino as well as a pair of shoes for a camel with stretched tendons in his front legs. Whilst certainly not his typical day to day repair job, the underlying principles and techniques are all the same and he had two very happy customers (and their owners, too).
If you walk past his shop on New Canal, you will probably have spotted the vintage sewing machine in the window. This dates back to 1931, and previously belonged to his grandfather. As well as this, Stuart also has, and uses, his grandfather’s hammer and hand tools in the shop too.
Beyond just shoes, Stuart will have a go at fixing anything. From clothing to bags, if you’ve got an item that needs some tlc, take it into Mossy’s and speak to Stuart about how he could help. In addition to this, he also offers engraving, house signs and key cutting.
Customer experience is a key part of his business, always providing customers and visitors with a warm welcome and excellent attention to detail. So much so, in fact, that Stuart can picture people’s items off the top of his head and doesn’t need to rely on tickets to match customers up with their items.
