Salisbury City Hall has been at the heart of the cityâs entertainment scene since 1937 and back then, it was an Art Deco cinema called the The Picture House. In 1950, it became part of the Odeon chain, before sadly closing in 1962. Following this, the City of New Sarum then purchased the building and transformed it into a multi purpose civic hall. It officially opened in 1963 as a tribute to local citizens who served in World War II, with a thriving event schedule.
Fast forward to 2020, the venue temporarily closed during the pandemic, before reopening again as one of Wiltshireâs key COVID-19 vaccination centres. Following this, sadly, Salisbury City Hall didnât reopen its doors until Justin purchased the rights to the business in early 2025. The doors then officially reopened in August 2025 following refurbishment. The first gig took to the stage in September 2025 with renowned band âfrom the Jamâ being the first performers back at Salisburyâs City Hall.
Over the years, Salisbury City Hall has hosted some iconic acts including The Beatles and David Bowie, and recent bookings include Jimmy Carr, Lulu, Harry Enfield and Fishermanâs Friends. Providing mass entertainment for the people of Salisbury requires having a wide range of acts in their brochure to suit everyoneâs taste, and Salisbury City Hall are doing just that. Whether itâs live music, comedy, Christmas shows, magic or conventions, there is always plenty to go and see!
Whilst the City Hall might be back open, the refurbishments arenât stopping yet. Keep your eye on the very front of the building as the historic Picture House entrance will once again be opened wide soon. This will allow the people of Salisbury the exciting opportunity to use the venue as it was created in the 60s and a chance to relive some of its greatest memories!
