Dr Louisa Toxvaerd Munch: What does freedom mean today? The new limits of power and how we fight back.
A talk on Magna Carta Day, 15 June, the anniversary of Magna Carta being sealed by King John in 1215
Over eight hundred years ago, Magna Carta established the principle that power must have limits, and even those who rule cannot stand entirely above the law. But what happens when power no longer wears a crown? This talk asks what freedom means in a world increasingly shaped by markets, corporations, algorithms and technologies that influence not only what we do, but how we understand ourselves. From Magna Carta’s attempt to constrain sovereign power to the less visible forms of power that govern contemporary life, Dr Louisa Munch explores how our understanding of freedom has changed, where power resides today, and what it might mean to resist it.

Salisbury Cathedral is home to one of the original 1215 copies of Magna Carta, the enduring symbol of justice and freedom. Audience members at this event will be able to view the Cathedral’s Magna Carta in the Chapter House before the talk begins, from 6:30pm.
