  • Meeting at the car park on Old Sarum (SU 139)
  • 14:00

The purpose is to introduce walkers to the landscape archaeology at Old Sarum and the upper Avon valley. Old Sarum is our lost medieval city and represents a complicated hilltop monument that is of central importance, not just locally, but to the development of England militarily, commercially, politically and as a part of our ecclesiastical history. We will consider its history, archaeology, topography and aspects of conservation of the river valley as well as the River Park in modern Salisbury.

The distance from the car park at Old Sarum to Salisbury Cathedral, along the Avon Valley, is about 4km (3 miles). Much of the walk is over grass and rough ground, especially around the Old Sarum hilltop. Appropriate footwear and outdoor clothing are essential. Children, whilst most welcome, must be able to cope with the distance, and should be always kept under supervision. To prevent dehydration, drinks are essential and snacks desirable.

Walkers may find it convenient to catch the bus to Old Sarum as this is a ‘one way journey.’ Details of the routes are available at https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/old-sarum/plan-your-visit/directions/.

We will finish in the Cathedral Close, after which we could repair to the New Inn.

Approximate timescale:
Depart 2pm from Old Sarum. There will be a brief introduction, followed by an archaeological tour of the hilltop Iron Age hillfort and medieval city site led by Bill. This will take about one hour.

We will then walk to Mill Lane off Stratford Road to the river Avon, where Hadrian will talk about the river and Bill will describe the settlement history of the valley itself.

3.30 We will proceed south-eastwards towards the Five Rivers Leisure Centre, to learn about conservation measures on the river floodplain.

4.30 We will cross Ashley Road and walk towards the River Park where Hadrian will talk about the new River Park, close to the city centre. We will return to the Cathedral Close for about 5pm, and there will be an opportunity for refreshment for those so inclined!
